Best Google Business Profile Categories (2026)
Choosing the right Google Business Profile primary and secondary categories is the single biggest GMB ranking lever.
Why categories matter so much
Your primary category tells Google which keyword queries you're eligible to rank for. If you pick "Contractor" instead of "Roofing Contractor," you'll miss every "roofer near me" search — no matter how many reviews you have.
How to find the best primary category
- Google your top 3 service keywords (e.g. "emergency plumber [city]").
- Look at the businesses ranking in the Map Pack.
- Use the GMBspy Chrome extension to see their primary categories.
- Pick the same category your top-ranking competitors use.
Primary vs secondary categories
- Primary: your single most important category. Carries 80% of the ranking weight.
- Secondary: up to 9 additional categories. Each one makes you eligible for more queries but dilutes your primary signal slightly.
Rule of thumb: pick a tightly relevant primary, then add 3–5 secondaries that match real services you offer.
Examples by industry
| Business | Primary | Secondaries |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency plumber | Emergency Plumber | Plumber, Drain Cleaning, Water Heater Installation |
| HVAC contractor | HVAC Contractor | Air Conditioning, Furnace Repair, Heating Contractor |
| Roofer | Roofing Contractor | Roof Repair, Roof Inspection |
| House cleaner | House Cleaning Service | Maid Service, Carpet Cleaning |
| Locksmith | Locksmith | Auto Locksmith, Emergency Locksmith |
When to change your primary category
- Top-3 rank in current category is locked in (don't disturb it).
- You expanded into a higher-value service.
- Your competitors are all using a more specific category.
Change primary categories no more than once every 90 days — Google distrusts rapid changes.
