How to Get More Google Reviews Fast (Safely)

A proven 7-step process to grow Google reviews 5–10x faster for local service businesses, plus the review-gating mistakes that get listings penalized.

Why review velocity matters more than total count

Google weighs recent reviews heavier than old ones for Map Pack ranking. A business with 80 reviews and 5 new ones per month will out-rank a business with 400 reviews and zero new ones in most categories.

The 7-step review-velocity system

  1. Build a Google review short link in your GBP dashboard. Use it everywhere.
  2. Send via SMS within 30 minutes of job completion. Email gets 5% reply rate; SMS gets 30%+.
  3. Make the ask personal. "Hey [name] — would you mind sharing a quick Google review? Means a lot to our small team. [link]"
  4. Follow up once after 3 days. Then stop.
  5. Reply to every review within 24 hours. Use the customer's name.
  6. Train field staff to ask in person. "If we did good work today, a Google review would help us a lot."
  7. Track weekly. Set a target like "5 new reviews per week" and review it in your Monday meeting.

What NOT to do (Google will penalize)

  • Review gating: asking happy customers for a Google review and unhappy ones for private feedback. Google removed thousands of profiles for this in 2024.
  • Buying reviews: detection is automated; entire review history gets wiped.
  • Incentivizing reviews: free service or discounts in exchange for reviews violates Google policy.

Realistic targets

  • Solo operator: 3–5 reviews/month
  • 2–5 person crew: 8–15 reviews/month
  • 10+ person team: 20–40 reviews/month
